When Online Dating Turns Into a Crypto Romance Scam. Dating, Sex and Intimacy Coaching can save your pennies

identifying romance scams in dating and intimacy coaching sessions

Online Dating, Crypto Romance Scams and how Dating, Sex and Intimacy coaching can help you avoid the mistakes I made

This is my true story.

After a relationship break-up, I entered the world of online dating feeling cautious but hopeful. Like many people navigating dating after loss, I wanted connection, companionship, and intimacy again.

What I didn’t expect was how quickly online dating can turn into a romance scam when you are emotionally vulnerable.

He messaged me within days. Attentive. Warm. Educated. Successful. Recently out of a long-term relationship too. He lived locally. He seemed emotionally available — interested in my life. We were intimate and getting closer.

We moved from the dating app to private messaging quickly. That felt normal in modern dating.

Daily messages. Regular video calls. He appeared reliable and intelligent.

He told me he was an architect and showed me his designs. Casually, he mentioned, he invested in Bitcoin and cryptocurrency trading. He showed me screenshots of profits. Sent me his website. I researched it.

It felt legitimate.

It wasn’t.

This is how a crypto romance scam works — trust first, investment later.

I invested a small amount. The bank flagged it but allowed it through. The account showed a profit. Romance scammers create fake gains to build confidence and emotional dependency.

So I invested more.

When I suggested meeting — since he was supposedly local — we arranged a date. At the last minute, he cancelled. His mother had been taken to hospital in Italy. Photos followed. Emotional pressure increased.

When I later tried to withdraw money from the crypto wallet, there were “fees.” Then “taxes.” Then delays. Then urgency. Pressure tactics. Emotional manipulation disguised as concern.

I realised what was happening.

He knew I knew.

And he disappeared.

The trading platform vanished. The money was gone.

The financial loss hurt. The emotional loss cut deeper.

There had been red flags in the online relationship. I ignored them. My desire for connection overrode my intuition. After a relationship break-up, we are rebuilding self-worth. We want intimacy. We want reassurance. Romance scammers target exactly that vulnerability.

I was fortunate. The bank reimbursed me because safeguarding procedures had not been followed correctly. I was incredibly lucky.

Many victims of online dating scams are not.

Red Flags in Online Dating and Crypto Romance Scams

  • Rapid emotional escalation

  • Intense declarations of connection early on

  • Investment or cryptocurrency discussions in a new relationship

  • Pressure to move off dating apps quickly

  • Encouragement to use specific crypto platforms

  • Profits that appear unusually easy

  • Emotional crisis stories used to delay meeting in person

Healthy dating builds intimacy slowly. It does not mix romance with financial transactions.
